Sahiwal

We realized early on that Ugandan farmers were going to be challenged with declining farm sizes due to land subdivisions as well as a difficult climate. That’s where the Sahiwal breed came in. Banuti Ranchers imported our first Sahiwal from El Karama Ranch Nanyuki and Solio Ranch in Naivasha, Kenya.

The Sahiwal’s advantage not only to the Ugandan farmer but also to the East African farmer is it’s dual-purpose nature, giving high milk and large beef production, making it the preferred breed as it best utilizes the land compared to a Friesian or Boran, which are single-purpose.

Desirable characteristics:

  • High protein content and rich in fat milk make it preferred for dairy products.
  • Very hardy letting it thrive in poor conditions and drought-prone areas
  • Tick-resistant and noted for its high resistance to disease
  • Extremely hardy under unfavorable climatic conditions
  • Dual-purpose nature (High milk and quality beef)
  • Long productive life and regular calving
