Banuti Ranchers
imported our Sahiwal from El Karama Ranch in Nanyuki, and Naivasha, Kenya.
The first introduction in East Africa was in 1931 to Kenya.
Banuti Ranchers realized that Ugandan farms are getting smaller and smaller
with land subdivisions. The advantage to the East African
farmer is the Sahiwal breed produces more milk and more beef,
making it the preferred breed, compared to a Friesian or Boran, which are single purpose.
The Sahiwal originated in the dry climatic area of India and Pakistan.
The climate change being experienced in Uganda make the Sahiwal a perfect breed for farmers to adapt to these changes.
The characteristics that are desirable to the Sahiwal include:
- High protein content that makes Sahiwal milk the preferred milk of yogurt makers
- High butterfat percentage of Sahiwal milk makes for far more butter than other breeds
- Tick-resistant and noted for its high resistance to parasites
- Extremely hardy under unfavorable climatic conditions
- High milk production with well-developed udder
- Demonstrate the ability to sire small, fast-growing calves
- Generally docile
- Colour ranges from reddish brown through to the more predominant red, with varying amounts of white on the neck and the underline
- Excellent quality beef
-
Daughters have good fertility and mastitis resistance
- Excellent temperament
